I WISH It Was More // REVIEW: Awaken by Ashok K Banker

Title: Awaken (The Shakti Trilogy #1)
Author: Ashok Banker
Publication Date: September 7th 2017
Publisher: Pan Macmillan India
Part of a Series?: Yes, Book 1 on 3 of the Shakti Trilogy
I Got A Copy Through: Pan Macmillan India (THANK YOU!)

Blurb Description: "The Haters are coming to destroy all life on Earth. It is not a question of if, but when.
The Brahmaand has already rung the warning bell and the awakening of the Preservers has begun. Kiara unexpectedly finds her skin covered with golden fur and her sense of smell extraordinarily enhanced; Saumya is suddenly able to go from Ahmedabad to New York in just a step; and Sia’s songs have the power to do things she had never imagined possible.
First in the thrilling Shakti Trilogy set in contemporary India, Ashok Banker’s action-packed and brilliantly imagined Awaken introduces our unlikely heroes who must discover and harness their superpowers before they can protect and preserve the Earth from the wrath of a menacing alien invasion."
I’ve had this book on my TBR for a few months now. I tried reading the book a while ago, but for some reason I just couldn’t go through with it until today. I’d like to thank Pan Macmillan India for sending me a copy of this book, although my opinions are unbiased and entirely my own.
Awaken was, if I had to describe this book in a word, STRANGE.

More importantly, it felt like this was the first or second draft while writing a novel and then all the fine tuning that comes after DIDN’T EXIST. This book was filled with broken English, phrases like ‘OMG OMG OMG’ and ‘super wow’, a few racist comments and THE WORST VILLAIN ALIEN RACE NAME OF ALL TIME.

Who names their supervillain race The Haters? *cue intense cringing*

LIKE SERIOUSLY. There were so many strange terms being given to everybody in this book including but not limited to The Haters, Preservers, Friends, Guruji’s Goons (??) and the Kindred. As a HUGE fan of superheroes and villains, I WAS SO SHOCKED THAT EVERY GROUP OF PEOPLE NAMED IN THIS BOOK HAD A CRINGE WORTHY NAME.

Awaken is the first book in a trilogy and it’s also the first book that I’ve read by Ashok Banker. It’s told from the point of view of three girls – Kiara, Saumya and Sia, and the strange powers they’re coming into and aren’t sure what to do about.

I won’t deny that Ashok Banker deals with a lot of important issues that Indian Woman/ brown girls face including being objectified, racism, the fight for freedom and even being trans, but IT WAS ALL DONE A) SO QUICKLY AND B) It just felt unfinished.

Like the rest of the book. As if there weren’t proper rounds of editing to make this book what it COULD HAVE BEEN.

Honestly, I don’t think I would’ve read this book if it wasn’t a review copy. It just didn’t resonate with me despite the fact that I WANTED THIS BROWN GIRLS WITH SUPER POWERS TO BE A FAVOURITE. It was a half done piece of work and I WISH it was more.

I don’t think I’ll be reading the sequel. 2 stars.

A Double Serving of ARC Reviews #7

Hello BookDragons! I'm writing this before I pack my way to mt first COMIC CON EVER! I'm going with a few of my friends, and I'm SO EXCITED! I have today two reviews, Fate of Flames by Sarah Raughley and Unnatural Deeds by Cyn Balog!
I also had the pleasure of interviewing BOTH these authors in September and you can read Sarah Raughley's here and Cyn Balog's here.

Title: Fate Of Flames (Effigies #1)
Author: Sarah Raughley
Publication Date: November 22nd 2016
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Part of a Series?: Yes, Book 1 of a Planned Trilogy
I Got A Copy Through: The Publisher via NetGalley (THANK YOU!)
Blurb Description: Four girls with the power to control the elements and save the world from a terrible evil must come together in the first epic novel in a brand-new series.
When Phantoms—massive beasts made from nightmares and darkness—suddenly appeared and began terrorizing the world, four girls, the Effigies, each gained a unique power to control one of the classical elements: earth, air, fire, and water. Since then, four girls across the world have continually fought against the Phantoms, fulfilling their cosmic duty. And when one Effigy dies, another girl gains her power as a replacement.
But now, with technologies in place to protect the world’s major cities from Phantom attacks, the Effigies have stopped defending humanity and, instead, have become international celebrities, with their heroic feats ranked, televised, and talked about in online fandoms.
Until the day that New York City’s protection against the Phantoms fails, a man seems to be able to control them by sheer force of will, and Maia, a high school student, unexpectedly becomes the Fire Effigy.
Now Maia has been thrown into battle with three girls who want nothing to do with one another. But with the first human villain that the girls have ever faced, and an army of Phantoms preparing for attack, there isn’t much time for the Effigies to learn how to work together.
Can the girls take control of their destinies before the world is destroyed forever?
“We fight and we die. That’s why we’re alive. That’s why we breathe. That’s why we exist. That’s just how it is.”
All Maia Finley ever wanted was to be someone – to be an Effigy.

Who are the Effigies?

Oh, only the four most important girls in the world with powers that gives them power over the elements. One Fire Effigy, One Wind Effigy, One Water Effigy and one Earth. Only four of them can exist at a time, and when one dies, another girl will take her place.

They are soldiers of the Sect – an international organisation established for the sole purpose of keeping the world safe from Phantoms – creatures of silky darkness and horrifying nightmares with the power to level cities in the blink of an eye.

And so, the last thing that orphan and nobody Maia Finley ever thought would happen, happened to her. After the death of the last Fire Effigy, she’s the new Chosen One.

But everything she knows about the Effigies she idolises, the institution they form an integral part of, and the assumed laws of the Phantoms are under attack, and what can a newbie that can’t even conjure her power do to save the world?
”This is reality. And if you can’t accept that, then get off the battlefield.”
Fate of Flames is not your average superhero book. It highlights four very different girls – one idealistic, one fatalistic, one scared and the last strong yet destructive – that have their own personas, and just can’t get along. In better words, Sarah Raughley portrays her Effigies as HUMAN SUPERHEROINES, flaws and all, and I LOVED IT.

I loved the complexity of the plot, the complexity of being an Effigy, the fact the social media had a part to play (and fangirls) and MOST OF ALL, it made me want more.

I just wish the answers we got were a little more substantial rather than just more questions, and that there was more POWER being used in the book over interrogations and photo shoots.

All in all, I will definitely be reading the sequel. 4 stars.

Title: Unnatural Deeds
Author: Cyn Balog
Publication Date: November 1st 2016
Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire
Part of a Series?: No, A Standalone
I Got A Copy Through: The Publisher via NetGalley (THANK YOU!)
Blurb Description: Secrets. Obsession. Murder. Victoria is about to discover just how dangerous it can be to lose yourself.
Victoria Zell doesn’t fit in, but she’s okay with that. All she needs is the company of her equally oddball boyfriend, Andrew. She doesn’t care what anyone else thinks…until magnetic, charming, mysterious Z comes into her life, and she starts lying to everyone she knows in an effort to unravel his secrets.
And then something terrible happens. Someone is dead and it’s time for Victoria to come clean. Interspersed with news clippings and police interviews, Victoria tells her story to Andrew, revealing her dark, horrible secrets…secrets that have finally come back to haunt her.
Murder, Mayhem, A Good Girl turned bad because of a charming, enigmatic boy? How COULD I say no?

In a Few Words (and not a million?): Unnatural Deeds was a lot of things, just not all that it promised it would be.

Victoria Zell is new at St. Ann’s School. She doesn’t talk to anyone, sits in the corner of her class and has an agoraphobic boyfriend/ neighbour who she’s been dating forever. Zachary Zimmerman, ‘Z’, is Victoria’s polar opposite. He’s popular, always the centre of attention and the more you talk to him, the less you know about him.

So, it’s a huge surprise to invisible Victoria wants popular boy Z to want to be friends with her, and the last thing she ever expected when she starts falling for him. Slowly, and obsessively.
While the storyline itself was quite unique, and the WHAT HAPPENED and WHO DID WHAT element was always present and encouraging you to read more, there were a lot of things just off about the book:

1.       Victoria Zell: I understand that the point of this book was to make her a social outcast and completely gullible to Z’s charms, but this girl DID NOT TRY AT ALL – to make friends, or even acquaintances, to be a part of the town, the school – NOTHING. She didn’t even use her phone or have social media! It wouldn’t have bothered me at all – because there are different kinds of people, but when Z became friends with her SHE CARED ABOUT ALL THESE THINGS – her looks, what the popular girls thought of her – EVERYTHING. Like I said, off.

2.       Zachary ‘Z’ Zimmerman: I’ve had my fair share of popular, enigmatic guys that are friends with EVERYBODY. I GET IT. I’ve had two best friends that would fit Z’s description in the social calendar, but I felt NOTHING with this boy. I didn’t see his charm, I didn’t see that SPECIAL SOMETHING that made him oh-so-shiny. He just looked good. Period. I didn’t like him and I didn’t trust him, and ALL THE SPARKLY GREATNESS that Victoria described about him just made it worse.

3.       The Ending: While I knew to expect a big shocker of an ending, and IT REALLY WAS, like you COULD NOT SEE THAT COMING, it just WAS NOT EXPLAINED ENOUGH. After a big question mark of a book, and a twist, there was BARELY ANY EXPLANATION. I would have loved SOMETHING, thank you. Sigh.

4.       The Interviews: There were a lot of interviews that were placed between the chapters with characters by the police supposed to give you extra, third hand information about what was going on without revealing anything, these were short, were of no help and I’ve just seen this done better like in Eileen Cook’s With Malice, and I didn’t like it very much.

All in all, a book worth a one-time read if young adult mystery and obsession is what you’re into. I didn’t feel a connection to any of the characters, but definite points to the story for not being predictable for the most part. 3 stars.
If you could choose one elemental power, what would it be? - Air, Fire, Water or Earth?
Have you read any YA books that have interviews and articles to help support the story?
I would LOVE recommendations!

Read my review of book one, Poison Princess here
And then, book two, Endless Knight here, followed by book three - Dead of Winter here.

I knew this day would come, but I had no idea it would be here so soon. I have pretty much binged this entire series in a couple of weeks, and at the beginning, I had no idea that I would be here, and in love.

The Arcana Chronicles is based on a game with life and death stakes. Every few centuries, a chosen twenty two reincarnated souls battle it out to be the winner, and claim immortality as their own. These twenty two Major Arcana have been gifted special powers by the old gods and are based on Tarot Cards.

How do you win? Well, you need to kill everyone else.

In this game, an alliance has been formed. One that vows not to kill, but to live their lives out as mortals not immortals. But in a game based on killing, and trust severed to almost nothing over the millennia, can the Arcana stay in the light?

After the unique storyline, I completely fell for the characters. There’s so much about these people that you can love, and so much of them to be exasperated about in a post-apocalyptic world, but most of all they feel SO REAL, you cannot help but fall and root for them to JUST BE HAPPY.

Evangeline Greene is the Empress – she can make and grow plants and also poison using them. In a world with no food or plants, her skills are invaluable. After surviving the start of the apocalypse with her mother, who then passed away, she continues from her home with Jackson Deveaux to get to her grandmother, who is a Tarasova, or a chronicler of the game. On the way she meets other Arcana and learns about the game.

There’s Selena Lua (The Moon), Lark (Fauna), Matthew (The Fool), Finn (The Magician), Aric (Death), Gruthie (The Heirophant), Vincent and Violet (The Lovers) and others with THE COOLEST (and scariest) POWERS EVER.

I can’t explain why I love this series in words – but IT IS AWESOME.

This will make you love characters you swore never to love, it will make your ships sink and then fly, it will make your heart break and then fix it together again.

Set in a brutal background, The Arcana Chronicles is a masterful work of art.

I am broken, I am past tears, but somehow I’m also ridiculously happy – is this what love feels like? – and I am so SO ready for book five.

AUTHOR BIO:
Meradeth’s never been a big fan of talking about herself, but if you really want to know, here are some random tidbits about her:

--She’s a Northern California girl. And now is braving the cold winters in Montana.
--When she’s not writing, she’s sequencing dead people’s DNA. For fun!
--She’s also an anthropology professor and loves getting people interested in studying humans.
--If she could have a super-power, it would totally be flying. Which is a little strange, because she’s terrified of heights.

**MY REVIEW**

I've only read one other Meradeth Houston book, and that was almost a full year ago- one of my first indie books, one of my first blog events- and the first author that I spoke to- and while Surrender The Sky wasn't a mindblowing book, it is most definitely one imprinted into my memory- and here I am, at the end of another one of her books- one that I loved VERY much!

I suppose what got me into the book after who it was written by and what that meant to me was the title itself- An Absence of Light- which for some reason sounds BRILLIANT- Just like all Meradeth's other titles! An Absence of Light starts off with a rather emotional bang, as described in the blurb. Leah's entire family has been murdered by these soulless things only she has been able to see for a long time- things that she calls the Shadows. Filled with grief she can't yet process, she takes off, leaving her family's rotting corpses and a possible murder conviction in her wake...

Lost, and broken, she stumbles upon people like her- ones that can not only see the shadows, but also have been hurt just as much. But they're also different. They've learnt how to fight back, and now, so can Leah!
But the shadows are only becoming more daring, and all they want is blood. A shadow take over is on the horizon and there are only three people that can stop it.

I LOVED THIS BOOK! I don't know what else to say, except for the fact that it was exactly what I wanted and nothing like what I expected- I can simply recommend it! The characters had pain and happiness that was so equally divided that you couldn't help but sympathize with them. In any case, there was only one drawback- I just wished that Leah went through something- SOMETHING- before meeting Manuel and the rest of the gang, just to make it seem more plausible that just running into a gang of people that could make your life a whole lot easier!

READ IT:)

Review: Catch Me When I Fall by Vicki Leigh

Title: Catch Me When I Fall
Author: Vicki Leigh
Publisher: Curiosity Quills Press
Publication Date: October 23rd 2014
Part of A Series?: Yes, Part 1 of  2 (so far)
I Got A Copy Through: The author, for a review

Blurb Description:In 1814, at the age of seventeen, Daniel Graham sacrificed himself to save another. Recruited at his death to be a Protector of the Night, he has spent 200 years as a Dreamcatcher, guarding humans from Nightmares—clawed, red-eyed creatures that feed off people’s fears while they sleep. He’s become one of the best, but he wants nothing more than to stop.

Then he’s given an assignment to watch over sixteen-year-old Kayla Bartlett, a clinically depressed patient in a psychiatric ward. Nightmares love a human with a tortured past. Yet, when they take a deep interest in her, appearing in unprecedented numbers, the job becomes more dangerous than any Daniel’s ever experienced—because someone with the power to control the monsters seems to want her dead.

Driven by his growing feelings for her, he whisks her away to Rome where others like him can keep her safe. Under their roof, the Protectors discover what Kayla is and why someone who can manipulate Nightmares has her in his sights. But before they can make a move, the Protectors are betrayed and Kayla is kidnapped. Daniel will stop at nothing to save her. Even if it means giving up his immortality.

He thought she was just another girl to protect. He was wrong.

**MY REVIEW**

“I was still a young soldier, just in a different kind of war. Good versus Evil. The cliché kind.”

I honestly don’t know what I was expecting from Catch Me When I Fall, for most of the time, I feel like I’ve simply outgrown the paranormal genre. But then, occasionally, there comes along a book that sounds good, and that makes me get into the genre again.

So, when I read the synopsis for this one, I was thinking along of the lines of damsel in distress girl with a strong boy, and a relationship that was so forbidden, that they just had to be together. Get the picture?

Well, I can quite honestly say that this was NOT that- and it surprised me! Because Catch Me When I Fall is a fresh, adrenaline filled and magically spelled book, GUARANTEED to keep you at the edge of your seats!

‘”War” was not a word we were accustomed to. We were the peacekeepers.”

The synopsis tells you what you need to know, so not much more about the actual story line except this- those paras that you’re reading, are just the VERY BEGINNING of the AMAZING tale that will leave you NEEDING to fangirl about it!

I loved that this book did NOT have a damsel in distress, or any of those other aforementioned clichés, I loved that this book had so many plot twists that you were left wondering where the heck the other one concluded and how the heck this new piece came into play. I also LOVED that this book had a wider focus range than more than two teens pining for each other (don’t get me wrong, that is good too, but this is just so FRESH!) And most of all I loved that no matter how hard I tried, this book was SO unpredictable, that I couldn’t help but falling in love.

Thinking in rather detail, though, I can only wish that the original rules of the Catchers were emphasised upon more, just a little, to make it seem a bit more, well, strict or whatever;)

Other than that, if you’re looking for a completely new take into the paranormal and magic genre- go ahead and pick up Vicki Leigh’s book- I couldn’t give it a higher recommendationJ

Gypsy By Trisha Leigh- Review

Author: Trisha Leigh
Publishing Date: May 13th 2014
Blurb Description: In the world of genetic mutation, Gypsy’s talent of knowing a person’s age of death is considered a failure. Her peers, the other Cavies, have powers that range from curdling a blood still in the vein to being able to overhear a conversation taking place three miles away, but when they’re taken from the sanctuary where they grew up and forced into the real world, Gypsy, with her all-but-invisible gift, is the one with the advantage.

The only one who’s safe, if the world finds out what they can do.

When the Cavies are attacked and inoculated with an unidentified virus, that illusion is shattered. Whatever was attached to the virus causes their abilities to change. Grow. In some cases, to escape their control.

Gypsy dreamed of normal high school, normal friends, a normal life, for years. Instead, the Cavies are sucked under a sea of government intrigue, weaponized genetic mutation, and crushing secrets that will reframe everything they’ve ever been told about how their "talents" came to be in the first place.

When they find out one of their own has been appropriated by the government, mistreated and forced to run dangerous missions, their desire for information becomes a pressing need. With only a series of guesses about their origins, the path to the truth becomes quickly littered with friends, enemies, and in the end, the Cavies ability to trust anyone at all.

My Review:

Superpowers. Haven't we always wanted them? Haven't we all looked up to the variety of superheroes flying across the movie screens or through the glossy pages of comic books? I know I have! These ultra cool abilities that make you stand apart from being just another person in the crowd; that make you feel wanted, special, needed- is pretty much what I always wanted!

So, before I start this, I should say, I am a HUGE fan of special abilities (if that wasn't already clear!!) so I might be a bit partial! (*X- Men fan alert*) oh, and also, Gypsy TOTALLY lived up to my expectations!

Then of course, great power comes with great responsibility, but most of the times, also with a lot of fear and denial, because almost nobody relishes in the unknown. That's what the Cavies are taught- that the world would never accept them, and that they belong here, with the people who stick electrodes in their heads from since when they can remember... and the worst part? It's true and they believe it.

Until, the truth about their captors is exposed to law enforcement bodies, and the Cavies are released into the real world with their real families- the one that they've only seen in the movies. Shocked, and ripped away from everything they knew, but still determined to protect those that kept then captive willingly is all while they try to survive in a world where they will most definitely be shunned, is definitely NOT easy, especially when they learn that everything they've been told is a complete LIE.

One of them can cause death, one teleported, another changes emotions, one can burn you, twins with super speed and super hearing, three Unstables' and of course, Gypsy, the girl who can see the age at which people will die- and they would all do anything to protect each other...

As they learn that there is no good and bad; that it's all only a matter of perspective, and that everybody wants something in return; some sort of personal goal they want to achieve- loyalties and friendships built over lifetimes are tested, emotions are scattered and lessons are learnt on love, life and family in one unforgettable tale!!

No more now- you gotta read it to love it!!

My Verdict:

This tale is X- Men meets all your favorite superheroes with a teenage spin- you. Have. To. Read. This!!
