Hi Everyone! When you see this post, I'll be flying out of town on the way to my four day vacation but, AS PROMISED, I'm managing to do a Stacking the Shelves post this week (WOOT!) I spent this week tied up with everything college - we had a few events going on there including a Media Summit and we even visited the set of a movie which left me time only to read one book this week *sighs*

Anyway, I got one MAJOR parcel this week that had me FREAKING out and fangirling that I actually had these books in my hands. So, without further ado, let's begin:

I've been waiting for over a YEAR for the Scholastic Warehouse to have these books back in stock again and I am so excited that they are finally sitting next to me right now as I type this out. I loved the first two books of Maggie Stiefvater's Raven Cycle quartet and I'm SO SO EXCITED for books three and four!

Also, I currently own them in HARDCOVER and the covers are gorgeous and... I'll stop ranting now. Expect reviews of these two very soon!


3. All The Crooked Saints by Maggie Stiefvater: 
While I have heard mixed reviews about this book, and there were a few people calling it problematic out there, I've decided to give Maggie Stiefvater the benefit of the doubt and go into this book with an open mind and look for all the miracles it seems to offer!

ALSO, HOW ARE ALL OF THESE COVERS SO AESTHETICALLY PLEASING? I cannot even. I love all of them SO SO MUCH!


From Sandhya Menon: 

1. From Twinkle With Love by Sandhya Menon: Sandhya Menon's debut novel, When Dimple Met Rishi was one of my TOP books of 2017 and I loved every second of this beautifully Desi novel and I honestly believe it's time for a re-read already.

When she offered Asian bloggers an eARC of her book, I JUMPED AT THE CHANCE. It's sitting on my iPad, just waiting for me to pick it up, and I honestly can't wait for when I find the perfect time to.

GIFTED: 


1. A Quiet Kind of Thunder by Sara Barnard: While this beautiful sounding book released in the UK a while ago, it only just did so in the US from Simon Teen and the lovely author, Sara Barnard chose me as a winner in her Twitter Giveaway to get a signed copy of the US Edition! It looks stunning and so many people have said that the story is heartbreaking and beautiful and I CANNOT WAIT TO GET INTO THIS BOOK!

I also stuck to my book buying ban and bought absolutely nothing this week, so YAY FOR ME! (I'm trying to get a handle on my TBR but Amazon and all it's deals are calling to me and here's to hoping that I last until next week!

After Frozen (GO SISTER POWER!) the new Cinderella movie came out, I was so disappointed that it wasn’t more… feministic. I expected Disney to have seen the pure joy that women around the world faced when true love’s kiss didn’t mean Prince Charming’s and to have changed Cinderella, but it was the absolute same as before. *continues weeping*

In any case, it was after that that I began STRONGLY BELIEVING that all Fairy Tales SHOULD BE MORE FEMINISTIC so that little girls will grow up knowing how to be strong, independent women.

And so when I first read the description of Melissa Bashardoust’s Girls Made of Snow and Glass, I KNEW I WOULD HAVE TO READ IT. And when I got approved to read an advance reader copy, I was OVER THE MOON.

Surprisingly, this book took me a really long while to get through. The book was slow paced and filled with introspection and I found myself skipping the long LONG descriptions that came after a few exchanges between characters.

Let’s break this down:

THINGS I REALLY LIKED:

1.       A FEMINISM AND LGBT FILLED FAIRY TALE RETELLING: Did you get all of those words? A FEMINIST. LGBT. FAIRY TALE. RETELLING. Really, can you ask for more? I already read one Snow While retelling earlier this year, Forest of A Thousand Lanterns and I LOVED IT for its Asian cast and anti-heroine but this one WITH MAGICAL POWERS SOUNDED JUST AS GOOD. I was so happy that this book turned the traditional fairy tale into a feminist book because WHAT’S NOT TO LOVE ABOUT THAT?

2.       STRONG FEMALE CAST: Most of the book was centred around strong female characters trying to find their way or themselves, and I loved it. Mina (the Queen/ Stepmother), Lynet (the Princess) and even Nadia were all characters that were so well done.

THINGS THAT REALLY COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER:

1.       THE PACE: THIS BOOK WAS VERY SLOW. It took me days and days to get through it purely because of how utterly slow paced it was. Like I mentioned before – there just wasn’t much HAPPENING in the book and it was filled with introspection from both Lynet and Mina about the SAME THINGS.

I found myself skipping parts of the inner monologues as I got to the latter half of the book because they were the SAME and I wasn’t learning any new information from them

I honestly felt that if the pace of this book had been different, the book itself would have been so much more enjoyable.

2.       DID I ALREADY SAY THE PACE?

3.       T-H-E -- P-A-C-E:

And that’s it. I absolutely love what Melissa Bashardoust’s book did for feminism in fairy tales considering HOW MUCH we need it, but I would be giving this book a lot higher of a rating if the book was faster paced. 2.75 stars.

Melissa Bashardoust (pronounced BASH-ar-doost) received her degree in English from the University of California, Berkeley, where she rediscovered her love for creative writing, children’s literature, and fairy tales and their retellings. We Are The Harry Potter Generation: A 20th Anniversary Edition Special

Every once, maybe twice, a generation comes a series so brilliant, it transcends the boundaries of the paper it was written on and becomes a part of the reality of the billions of people who've opened the pages of the book, watched the movies, bought a single piece of merchandise, visited King's Cross station or the Universal Studios parks, talked about it and grew up the actors who portrayed our beloved characters.

I wasn't born when Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone came out but just like everybody else

who has introduced themselves to J.K.Rowling's world, I remember my Harry Potter journey.

I read Philosopher's Stone and Chamber of Secrets three times each at the age of nine. I had never related with a character more than the Library loving, all knowing Hermoine Granger and I always thought of myself in her shoes during all the times I imagined myself getting a Hogwarts letter and going there.

I remember the first time that I read Prisoner of Azkaban, the rain was falling from the sky, my cousins and I were seated on my grandma's large balcony and I was drinking hot chocolate as I finally got to read the book I'd been waiting for.

I borrowed Goblet of Fire and Order of the Pheonix from the local library when I was 10 and devoured them within two days each - what were summers for if not for good books?

At the age of 11 was when I embarked on the final leg of my Harry Potter journey for the first time. I read Half Blood Prince in four continuous hours and then managed to stretch Deathly Hallows for a week, only to re-open in the minute after I flipped to the acknowledgements, unable to accept that I had reached the end.

Except it wasn't the end, was it? 

Harry Potter, Hermoine Granger, Ron Wealsey, Hogwarts, The Weasleys, Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes, Dumbledore, Buckbeack, Hagrid, Luna, Neville, Dobby, Snape, Slughorn, McGonagall and everything about J.K.Rowling's world lives on in all of us, a part of us forever.

I can talk to people half the world away through the internet who also see themselves in Hermoine as I do.

I can walk up to a person in the bookstore reading their favourite scene in the Harry Potter books and become instant friends with them.

I can watch my cousins open the first book and be welcomed into a world that they will forever remember.

And so, when Bloomsbury announced that there would be house editions of Philosopher's Stone I knew that I would be a buyer. Before I begin describing what was actually inside the book, I feel like that ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUSLY PINK MARVEL OF A COVER NEEDS TO BE DISCUSSED. It is so fun, perfect and AAH. It honestly feels like a privilege to own books with beautiful covers and Queens of Geek was one of those.

Also, this book was set in a fictional version of San Diego Comic Con which is the ONE CON my two best friends and I have been DYING to go to for years, and this book felt like I was living vicariously and I LOVED THAT.

THOUGHTS:

1.       This book tried to take on a LOT of topics – Anxiety, Sexuality, Body Shaming and Fame among others in a very small space. All of them were handled really well, and the intended message WAS put across, but in a book that is BARELY 300 pages, it felt rushed. Body Shaming got a chapter, Sexuality or rather Bisexuality was mostly given one conversation. I think it’s AWESOME that so much was there, I just wish it was all talked about more.

2.       THIS WAS SET IN A CONVENTION. WITH THREE BEST FRIENDS. And I really really loved it. What’s better than a bunch of real best friends who are all geeks at the biggest convention in the world geeking out and falling in love? THE BEST THANK YOU!

3.       While I thought that this book, and the issues it handled could have been dealt with in more depth, Anxiety was handled absolutely perfectly. More than anything else, I understood what Taylor was going through when the book was told in her viewpoint. I loved how it was explained to those of us who don’t suffer from Anxiety, I love how STRONG Taylor was at Supa Con. Basically I loved Taylor, and the writing that created her.

4.       Taylor and Jamie are my new OTP. HONESTLY. Best Friend Romances are my ACHILLES HEEL or plot lines and while I’d love them on principle, I ADORE the chemistry that Jen Wilde manages to create between them. They were both suck adorable geeky humans and so easy to love.

5.       I really liked Charlie as a person. She was strong and had her own insecurities and her voice was so powerful. She wasn’t just a pink haired movie star, she felt like a real person and I connected with her oh-so easily. 

Would I recommend reading this? UHM YES. If you’re a fangirl that loves reading books about Fangirls and best friends and Conventions, THIS IS SO FOR YOU!

An important geek filled ride that will leave you smiling, swooning and booking tickets to the con you’ve always dreamed of going too! 4 stars.

Before I start, I should say that I’m a little wary going into fandom novels. I have this irrational fear that the protagonist is only a fangirl or a fanboy as a quirky side story and that it’s not at all given enough importance.

And yet, after about ten minutes of reading Geekerella, I knew I was didn't need to be wary of ANYTHING. 

Danielle – Elle – lives with her horrible stepmother (*ahem stepmonster*) and her two equally horrible stepsisters. Her mom died at a young age, and her father in an accident a while later. In a home that used to be hers and her father’s, she feel like an outsider. She’s made to do the chores and the cleaning and she also has a job – she’s a modern day Cinderella, only without a Prince Charming.

Until she gets a call from a strange number, for what used to be her dad’s number for the Convention he used to organise, and a conversation sparks with a boy she’s never met and knows nothing about. A boy she’s also spewing hate about on the Internet for his new role in her favourite show’s reboot.

And her geeky fairy tale is just about to begin.

“All me had was a moment. Just a moment in an impossible universe waltzing that beautiful, impossible waltz.”

I LOVED ALL THE GEEKY AND ADORABLE THINGS ABOUT THIS BOOK.

Told from the dual perspectives of Elle (Cinderella) and Darien (Prince Charming), Geekerella is EVERYTHING a fairy tale retelling with a fangirl twist should be.

Let me list it all out:

1)      THERE ARE ALL THE FANDOM REFERENCES AND PUNS AND YOU WILL GET THEM AND IT WILL MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE YOU’VE COME HOME

2)      Darien is Elle’s Fictional Crush in a reboot of her favourite TV Show, and he is SO perfect and insecure and I LOVE HIM ACK.

3)      DID I MENTION THAT DARIEN IS A FANBOY? He was a Prince Charming FANBOY. SAVE ME.

4)      Sage (Elle’s best friend/ co-worker) with her Green hair and attitude to match is AWESOME and you will fall in love. (Totally think she deserves her own book)

5)      It’s such a Cinderella retelling with the BEST KIND OF TWIST.

The only reason this isn’t a five star read for me is because in the end of the book, Elle and Darien were MAGICALLY IN LOVE WITH EACH OTHER. I understand having feelings/ being deep on the crush end but I DIDN’T GET HOW THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE IN LOVE WITH EACH OTHER.

A hilarious, adorable tribute to fairy tales and fandoms that you NEED TO GET YOUR HANDS ON!

In a nutshell, Unconventional is a masterpiece that will make you BELIEVE in love, magical boys that write books that feel like they’re speaking to you and pineapples all over again!

Maybe you never needed your faith in pineapples to be reaffirmed, BUT IT WILL BE REGARDLESS.

Lexi Angelo is a convention Kid – the High Priestess of the Order of the Clipboard, you could say. If you don’t know what those are, prepare to be educated. Lexi’s father, Max Angelo runs an event planning company and while he has his team to do all the big stuff, he personally (along with his daughter, of course) loves planning the conventions.

Think the Comic-Con you’ve always wanted to go to, and a Max Angelo Convention is probably better.

Lexi has every aspect of the conventions planned out, even though she knows that fifteen minutes, it will all go to hell. With her team of friends, they organise and manage the chaos that is thousands of fans and temperamental artists with poise, and reprieves under tables.

Lexi thought she had it all… until Aidan Green.

And believe me, YOU will never experience a love story as FREAKING ADORABLE as this one is!

If you haven’t gotten it from a) the happy tears or b) the five star rating let me tell you, I LOVE THIS BOOK. LOVE IT. LOVE IT SO MUCH THAT I WAS SQUEALING AND FLAILING AND FANGIRLING AND FALLING for this world and these characters, and let me tell you why:

1.       IT’S CENTERED ON CONVENTIONS: If this isn’t THE MOST ADORABLE place to place to set a book I DON’T KNOW WHAT IS. It has chaos, and MORE CHAOS and some crazy characters and forms SUCH a fun background, it’s really difficult to describe.

2.       THE CHEMISTRY: It is VERY hard to get chemistry right, VERY HARD. And yet somehow, Maggie Harcourt managed to make this awkward chemistry PERFECT, with all their ups and downs and it made me SQUEAL WITH DELIGHT.

3.       THE ADORABLENESS: I honestly cannot DEAL with the amount of adorableness that this book contained (hence, you will find the word adorable in this review about 8,000 times) but the dialogue between Aidan/ Haydn and Lexi was brilliant and REAL and awkward and everything you’re looking for in a book like this.

I think I should stop ranting now and just MAKE YOU GO READ THIS BOOK.

She always wanted to be a writer, but has also worked as a hotel chambermaid, a PA and for a French chef along the way, as well as spending several years involved in convention running. Writing is still her favourite thing, but she also loves the theatre. She currently lives in Bath - where she can usually be found in a bookshop or somewhere near the river. She guards the secret of her favourite coffee shop jealously, because she has the perfect spot picked out there for people-watching.
