When I heard from the QUEEN, Jodi Meadows, herself that I would be one of the lucky souls to get my hands on an ARC of the first book of her BEAUTIFUL new series, I freaked out for at least two days in pure excitement.

1. Creating the world a fantasy novel is set in is just as important as the characters in it. Could you give your readers a brief history of the Fallen Isles and their Fallen Gods?

Jodi: That is a big question! I have lots and lots of history for the Fallen Isles and the world of Noore, most which won’t make it onto the story.

The quick version is that there was a planet called Noore, and gods that lived in the heavens. One day, for unknown reasons, seven of those gods crashed down into the ocean. (Lots of people died.) Those gods are called the Fallen Gods, while those who remained in the heavens are the Upper Gods.  

2. There are various dragon species in Before She Ignites. Could you give us their species names and a small description about each of them?

Jodi: There are way too many species of dragons to list here! We’d never move on to the next question, haha! But the main species of dragon that’s in the book is the Drakontos raptus, a small hunting dragon. While they aren’t domesticated, they can be taught, like a ferret or a bird of prey.

In the book, LaLa and Crystal are the main two representatives of this species, and they’re honestly pretty silly creatures. (Don’t tell them that, though. Dragons like to think they are dignified.)

3. If you were a Drakon Warrior, which of the above species would you choose to ride and what would you name your dragon?

Jodi: Frankly, I’d be a terrible Drakon Warrior. I am an inside person. But if I had to be one and I somehow survived the training, I would like to ride a Drakontos rex. They’re very large dragons, and I feel like if I were to slip, there’d be a lot of dragon for me to catch myself on before I fell to my death.

I might name it Sandblaster. Not for any specific reason. It’s just the first thing that came to my mind.

So sorry, Sandblaster.

4. Noorestones play a very important role in Before She Ignites. For readers who haven't read the book yet, do share one fact about noorestones that you know will intrigue them!

Jodi: Noorestones are crystals mined from inside the earth. When sunlight touches them, an inner fire is activated and they begin to glow. Since they’re plentiful, they’re an inexpensive (and pretty) source of light for everyone in the Fallen Isles.

5. Mira Minkoba is an atypical YA heroine as she struggles with her self worth and panic attacks. If you could give one piece of advice to Mira what would it be?

Jodi: I would ask her to believe in herself. That’s hard for all of us, I know. But I would remind Mira that she is strong--stronger than she knows--and she can endure.

6. Everyone talks about the challenges a debut author faces as their first book or series goes out into the world. The Fallen Isles trilogy will be your third series coming out into the world. What changes as each new book comes out and what parts remain the same?

Jodi: When my first book came out, I sort of felt like the world would shift on release day. That my life would be forever altered. And in a way, it has, because people can buy my books now. But overall, the day felt rather anticlimactic.

Now, I know what to expect, which is a relief, but I think there’s always a fear of losing people. Writers always hope to grow their audience, and the last thing they want is to disappoint existing readers.

7. What can you tell us about books two and three in the Fallen Isles trilogy? Might there be some badass dragon riding in on of them?

Jodi: I think reader will kill me if there isn’t badass dragon riding, and I want to live to write more books.

Actual Rating 4.5 Stars

In a nutshell, why you HAVE to read this book:

    1)      DRAGONS. (Flying, fire breathing, fluffy, BEST MYTHICAL CREATURES EVER - dragons)

   2)      Main character suffers from Panic attacks (MENTAL HEALTH IN YA FANTASY. FINALLY)

   3)      MAGIC AND DRAGON TRAFFICKING AND WAR AND FINDING YOURSELF AND FRIENDSHIP.

You’ll have to forgive me if most of my review is filled with capital letters because I just finished this book a few hours ago and everything – EVERYTHING, I TELL YOU (but especially the dragons) – about this book made me SO HAPPY. I missed Jodi Meadows’ writing and her way to twist the very world she introduced to you and EVERYTHING.

And now I’m gushing, and sad it’s over and waiting desperately for book two. YOU NEED THIS BOOK IN YOUR LIVES.

Let’s break it down:

WRITING:

Jodi Meadows’ writing has always taken me by a storm. It’s simple and sophisticated and totally eliminated that time you take to get used to a fantasy world, and allows you to simply slip in and out seamlessly. I loved how Mina was scared and made mistakes but she was pure of heart and her character came alive with the writing.

IDEA:

Let’s be honest – in a book with dragons, HOW CAN YOU GO WRONG? This book incorporates a main characters with mental health problems, in love with dragons even though she shouldn’t be and her growth as she learns about the real world locked in a prison underground. It was a gorgeous idea, and written really well and DID I SAY THERE ARFE DRAGONS? WHAT MORE DO YOU NEED?

PLOT:

While the idea and writing were really good, I feel like the plot could have been better? The book kept switching from past to present and not in a uniform way which slightly shook me.

For a majority of this book, Mina is locked in a dark cell. Everything is done SO SO WELL – from the madness that ensures when she’s locked, the starvation and thirst and the need for human contact and communication and the lists in her head and her hallucinations. Jodi managed to capture the intensity of being a prisoner in harsh conditions very well.

I can’t shake the feeling that BSI could have had a LITTLE less time in the prison and a LITTLE MORE out there in the real world, actually advancing the plot. I understand why all of it was essential to her character development but I wish a little more happened as well.

CHARACTERS:

The character of Mira Minkoba was BEAUTIFULLY brought out. The peace treaty between the islands was written with her as the ‘Hopebearer’ and all her life she’s been a pretty doll for the ruling council until she speaks up and gets thrown into a prison for life.

She suffers from panic attacks, her self-image is in shambles and she’s never had to survive on her own until the prison, and how she grows (slowly but surely) was an amazing journey to witness. ALSO, SHE LOVES DRAGONS AND I LOVE HER.

I loved her best friends as well – every good book needs good best friends and she had friends that would risk their lives for her. Mina’s prison cell mates and the evil guards were also done really well.

Her relationship with Aaru was one of the highlights of this book – I loved their method of communication, how they bonded and the powers of theirs that we got hints of. I’m very excited to see how everything goes in book two.

CONCLUSION:

I LOVED THIS BOOK. It had dragons and mental health and friendship and love and politics and conspiracy and YOU NEED THIS.

Another masterpiece from a Queen of Fantasy. 4.5 stars.

Before I begin, can we PLEASE have some SERIOUS COVER APPRECIATION FOR THIS BOOK? I know we aren’t supposed to judge books by their covers, but honestly, if a book has a good cover, it makes me was to OWN AND READ it THAT MUCH MORE!

Saying this book looks beautiful is an understatement because the Cover Gods in the Shiny Book Tower have TRULY outdone themselves this time. Combine a beautiful book with a FEMALE PIRATE AND MAGIC and this was a book ALL OF MY BOOKDRAGON TINGLY SENSES WERE TELLING ME I HAD TO READ IT.

I buddy read this book with the lovely Anisha who blogs (tweets and bookstagrams over at Sprinkled Pages) but she was so much faster than me at reading it.

Let’s break this book down:

IDEA:

Female Pirates, Destiny, Magic, Gods and Empires in the balance? It was a no-brainer that I needed to read Song of the Current because EVERYTHING about it sounded so good. Moreover, I heard BRILLIANT things about this book before I began and it had me even more excited.

PLOT:

I’ll be honest, it took a while to get used to the world this was set in. As Anisha and I spoke about while we read the book:

a)      The world-building could have been better. We were thrown names of countries and cities, titles and sailing terms with little to no explanation which resulted in a LOT of flipping to the front where the map what and trying to figure out WHAT WAS GOING ON.

b)      A glossary for this book would HONESTLY have been much appreciated. It would have really helped in understanding everything.

Since the world building was a little rough, it took me a while to get used to the story. I hoped that Tarquin wouldn’t be the love interest and I hoped that the Black Dogs would be some serious opponents but I was slightly let down on both counts.

At the same time, there were also a lot of things I LOVED, including how Caro was the PERFECT BADA*S HEROINE. As she says, she isn’t someone waiting to be rescued like a princess in a tower and moved towards something better. (YES! A FIRST! GO SARAH TOLSCER!) She made decisions on her own and her parents respected them instead of trying to mould her to fit their expectations. (ONCE AGAIN, THANK YOU SARAH.)

I also LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVED that ending. If I was unsure about the book for the first two thirds, the BRILLIANT ending made up for it. (No spoilers)

WRITING:

I’m mostly going to tie this to the world building that could’ve been better and hence by default, the writing could have been too. I loved how the concepts of the Gods and Destiny and Fate were written about, but I just wish the world building had been better.

CONCLUSION:

Be true to yourself, could you TRULY pass up a book with FEMALE PIRATES, MAGIC AND A SPECTACULAR COVER? Song of the Current is definitely worth your time, and your heart! 4 stars.

It’s taken me a while to get through this book, but now that I’m done, I find that it’s occupying all of my thoughts. I’ve been thinking of Tea, Fox, the daeva, the rest of the Asha, the Willows and the asha-ka so often, it’s only slightly discerning.

Basically, The Bone Witch is a deep, gorgeous fantasy filled with exquisite power, dark creatures and a characters that will stay with you long after they’re gone.

“The perhaps we should carve a world one day where the strength lies in who you are, rather than in what they expect you to be.”

Tea Pakhlavi used to be nobody. Until the day she raised her brother from the dead, on the day of his own funeral.

In the kingdom of Odalia, Bone Witches are ones to avoid. They can raise the dead and compel the living and are the only witches that can control the daeva, creatures made out of nightmares that want nothing but death and destruction.

Tea is taken away from her home, and her country to live with other Asha – the most powerful of witches. As a Dark Asha with immense power, Tea is quickly introduced to a world of scheming, darkness and power that is hidden under a mark of beauty, grace and perfection.

And the world will never be the same for it.

“This is my new family. This is my new identity. I will be the bone witch the kingdom fears, and I will make them pay.”

One of the things I loved the MOST about the book WAY the story was told – the first with Tea where she began as an Asha Novice, and to where she is now, an exiled bone witch with immeasurable power in the Bay Of Skulls, plotting her revenge against everyone that wronged her.

It was such an intense feeling, seeing her begin as someone who didn’t know what she was capable of to a force to be reckoned with and IT MADE ME LOVE HER ALL THE MORE. While this book was the start of her path, I CANNOT WAIT for Rin Chupeco to fill in the blanks.

Another thing I loved was the ATTENTION TO DETAIL. Whether it was politics, secondary characters, the plot or the magic, this book HAD IT ALL. There were so many characters and places and kingdoms that overwhelmed me at first but WOW did it all come together and make me fall in love.

One of the things I DISLIKED was the slow pace of the beginning, and it took FOREVER (about 30%) of the book for me to even feel like I was enjoying it.

However, the only thing that REALLY bothered me was the relationship between Prince Kance and Tea. It felt like SUCH A CLICHÉ PLOT POINT AND I WANTED TO ROLL MY EYES. Apart from a few interactions, we SUDDENLY hear that OH DAMN “Stay away from the Prince” and “You’re a danger to him.” And I a) WAS NOT FEELING IT and b) could not FATHOM the romance between then and c) WAS NOT FEELING IT.

Will I be reading the sequel? HELL YES.

Will I be hoping to see more Dark Magic? UHM YES.

A deeply woven, must-read fantasy book for all lovers of the genre (and an anti-hero.) 4 stars.

Despite an unsettling resemblance to Japanese revenants, Rin always maintains her sense of hummus. Born and raised in Manila, Philippines, she keeps four pets: a dog, two birds, and a husband. Dances like the neighbors are watching.

We're Dead In This Ghost Town. That title itself gave me shivers, thinking of all the dangers the new town the group was going to explore might hold.

Truth be told, while nothing BAD happened, this was one of the most entertaining episodes I've read, and I loved it. Also, there was a Game of Thrones reference and EEEEK. If I died without finishing the show, I'd probably be sad too.

This episode is all about the city that May discovered a two episodes ago, one with ACTUAL modern structures and lights (so by assumption, electricity) that the team (do they have a name?) has finally decided to explore. Told from Loki's viewpoint, who I didn't really like in the last episode, We're Dead In This Ghost Town is fun, filled with bonding, jokes and cool technology and I WANT MORE.

If you remember from Episode 4, I didn't quite like Loki, or his story, but now, in Episode 11, I finally managed to connect with him as we learn the second part of his story. (HEARTBREAKING, by the way)

While I finally started liking Loki, what I liked more about this episode was the friendship that was forged between Loki and Holden, out very first narrator. As the talk about their mistakes, how they got to this nowhere place they're at, and bond over the cool tech and DRAGONS (ACK. #DragonLove) they find this sort of rhythm that I loved.

I loved it, I can't wait for more. 4.5 stars.
