EVE OF MAN left me with:

1)      A sense of something missing, or potential unfulfilled, if you know what I mean

Look, I LOVE dystopian novels. I’ve read so many in the last year alone – This Mortal Coil, in particular, to name my favourite one. I love that everything has changed in the not too distant future, that is very real and scary and Eve of Man seemed like it had the PERFECT plot, but somehow, didn’t live up to it’s potential.

MY THOUGHTS:

1.       Surprisingly, the beginning of this book RAISED my expectations. It was this brilliant start, switching between the highly sheltered, only girl in the world born in fifty years and a boy on the outside, an integral part of the illusion created to keep her safe.

2.       I basically loved that this book was told between both Eve and Bram’s viewpoints as the figured out everything happening behind the curtain with the EPO

3.       While I loved the plot and the WAY the story was told, I feel like there were some unfinished elements and some elements that felt VERY forced:

*SPOILERS*

A)     After Bram left the tower and went with the Freevers, the way they trusted him and ALSO, how he was suddenly their leader was WAY TOO ABRUPT. Absolutely no rebellion EVER would trust someone who used to be on the enemy side just one day ago and it seemed like a little too much to take in.

B)      I felt like a lot of the parts with Eve were filler. Maybe I just didn’t like her enough, but I didn’t really enjoy reading through her naïve world view (not her fault) or her tantrums… I just didn’t. I hope she grows in the next two books as a person, and I hope I’ll like her more.

C)      I feel like the conspiracy with the ‘big bad organisation’ was underplayed. The romance between Eve and Bram took the story over, while the actual consequences to repopulating, the science and the ‘evil’ organisation just went away like POOF

4.       At the same time, I will definitely be picking up the next book. While there was a lot I thought COULD have been done so much better, considering the stakes, I do HOPE it will all be better in the second book.

I fast paced, interesting story with a GREAT PLOT, but with execution that could have been improved. I will definitely be reading more in the series. 3.5 Stars.

I put this book down about half an hour ago and HOLY CRAP. I honestly do not know what to do with myself anymore because while I thought Warcross would be good, I didn’t KNOW THAT IT WOULD BE THIS GOOD?

Also, that ending took the WIND out of me and I ACTUALLY let out a scream (nobody was around to hear me, so I’ll just post it on the internet for everyone to publicly judge me) and I cannot EXPLAIN how much I need the  sequel right now.

I read Marie Lu’s The Young Elites trilogy only a month (or so) ago and while it had its ups and downs, Warcross was PURE 100% PERFECTION AND ADRENALINE FILLED AND MIND TWISTINGLY GOOD AND I CANNOT CONTAIN MY EXCITEMENT RIGHT NOW. (Does this sentence even make any sense?)

I simply have to get my thoughts out on this review, regardless if they make sense or not, so prepare for a lot of capital letters and fangirling down below.

MY THOUGHTS:

1.       I always go into hyped books a little jaded. I mean *what if* after I believe that it will be the best book EVER, it isn’t and then I HAVE TO TEND TO MY POOR BRUISED BOOKWORM HEART AND SOUL? Yeah, I can’t. SO, I went into Warcross a little jaded but within NO TIME AT ALL I JOINED THE FANDOM and I SUPPORT ALL THE HYPE because this book is CRIMINALLY INSANE (in the best way possible.)

2.       THE WORLD BUILDING (especially the Virtual Reality World Building) is INSANE. HOW DO YOU COME UP WITH WORLDS LIKE THIS, MARIE LU? The technology, the arenas, the power-ups, the dark world inside the world – ALL OF IT WAS shockingly good and kept my brain spinning in marvel.

3.        I LOVED Emika Chen. I loved her independent streak, her fighter attitude, her genius brain and her inability to back down. She was one of the best characters I’ve met this year and I AM SO EXCITED TO DO IT AGAIN in book two!

4.       I loved Hideo Tanaka as well. He was quiet, withdrawn, OBVIOUSLY a genius and I LOVED HIM AND EMIKA TOGETHER. Also, the story of his past broke my heart into tiny little pieces.

5.       The pace of this book was (also) INSANE. There was always something happening with never a dull moment and with SO MANY characters and insane technology, the plot twists JUST KEPT COMING and I loved it. I read it in two days with college around AND an exam in between because it was SO HARD to tear myself away from it.\

6.       Can I also talk about how stunning Warcross (the actual game) was? More, specifically, I LOVED the championships and everything to do with them. From the dome fights, the insane worlds that teams had to battle it out in and even the structure of each team – Captain, Architect, Fighter, Thief and Shield. Which brings me to HOW MUCH I LOVED The Phoenix Riders and the way they trained and their camaraderie! I only wish we had MORE of them and of the actual game!

7.       I think the ONLY THING I didn’t like (much) about the book was that I pretty much predicted one of the MAJOR plot twists and made it not so shocking – but I was SO WRONG about the rest of it, AND IT AMAZED ME.

All in all, this book is so SO worthy of every amount of praise that’s been thrown at it. Warcross is spectacular, adrenaline filled, mind twisting and I LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT. 5 stars.

You know that book you have on your TBR – the one with a BEAUTIFUL cover and all the write plot points you love that you just can’t WAIT to read but for some reason or the other, don’t get to it for the longest time? Well, that is what Your One And Only was for me.

I knew I wanted NEEDED to read this book ever since it started popping around on HMH Teen’s social media and when an AMAZING HMH publicist offered to send me an actual physical advance copy of Your One And Only, I JUMPED IN JOY!

IN SHORT: Despite the fact that this book is slow paced, the intricate plot and writing make up for it in ways that I can barely explain. Your Only And Only redefines what it means to be human in a futuristic world where humans are almost extinct and I loved every second of this riveting tale.

Let’s break this down:

WRITING:

Your One And Only is Adrianne Finlay’s debut novel and the writing is SPECTACULAR. While the book is a bit slow paced in terms of the plot, Adrianne’s writing is what made this book come to life. The book alternates between Jack’s, one of the last human boys in existence, and Althea – 310’s, a three hundredth generation genetically engineered clone and it really manages to highlight what it means to be human and about compassion and humanity.

PLOT AND IDEA:

Honestly, I went into this book expecting something completely different – maybe something fast paced and more like the last futuristic book I read (which was This Mortal Coil) in case you’re wondering.

It did take me about fifty or so pages to get properly into Your One And Only, and also to fully understand the world the book was set in and get all of the different varieties of clones straight, but once I did, I fell in love with the book and what it was about.

The reason this isn’t a five star book for me is PURELY because I wasn’t sure how I felt about that ending and a certain thing blowing up. Like WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR THE FUTURE? It felt very open ended and WRONG at the same time to doom a species and I just wish it was handled better.

CHARACTERS:

I didn’t connect with any of the characters. As I think about it now, I liked Althea – 310 and Jack and Samuel – 299 and Nyla – 313 but I FEEL NO INTENSE FEELINGS ABOUT THEM. Maybe it was because I will never go through the things that they do in the book.

I did LOVE the plot and how characters were named, though. Names like Carson 313 and Althea 310 really succeeded in giving this book a futuristic vibe.

CONCLUSION:

I wish the ending was done a whole lot better AND that the pace was a little faster, but at the end of the day, I thoroughly enjoyed reading Your One And Only. It was a one of a kind, intricate futuristic novel that I HIGHLY recommend! 4 stars.

Five Reasons Why You NEED Dive Into Jason Segel and Kristen Miller's Otherworld

When I got the email that I would be receiving a special package containing a hot off the presses hardback of one of my MOST anticipated releases of the year, I might have happy danced around the place.

Do bookdragons happy dance? I think we can, when it comes to bookish news and then spew fire on everything else? And also devour all books. Yup, that is the life.

Anyway, over the weekend I FINALLY found the time to dive i nto Jason Segel and Kristen Miller's BRILLIANT YA novel, Otherworld and I fell in love with everything it had to offer. So, instead of doing a simple review, I decided to do a post talking about the Five Reasons Why You NEED Dive Into Otherworld:

In Short: This book was BRILLIANT – filled with a plot structure that kept evolving, brave and lifelike characters and a virtual reality game that was more real than virtual. It was fast paced, filled with twists and a changing environment and unlike anything I’ve ever read

.

There are so many reasons why you should already be holding Otherworld in your arms, including:

1.       SIMON EATON:

Within the first few chapters, I was ALREADY in love with Simon Eaton, the protagonist. He was reckless and ruthless in this world and Otherworld and unflinchingly loyal to the girl he loved. I loved his courage, his ability to brave any situation but most of all, his readiness to go to the ends of this Earth and a virtual reality for a girl he loved. He was a BRILLIANT character, deep and I loved every second of his three hundred plus page narration.

2.       OTHERWORLD:

This world- the virtual reality people could step into was a whole other level of insane. I thought this book would be about an unreal life in a very believable video game made to satisfy your every desire BUT IT WASN’T. Otherworld was about how a virtual reality game took a life of its own, a conspiracy, survival, love, loyalty, secrets and human nature and so different from anything I’ve ever read before.

3.       THE EVOLVING PLOT STRUCTURE:

The plot of Otherworld is something I marvelled. It was a little confusing at first when Simon put on a disk and entered the game instead of a headset, with the Children and the realms but that was one of the biggest mysteries and best parts of this BRILLIANT BOOK. We move from the real world to Otherworld and inside Otherworld itself, we switch between realms that people virtually settle in to indulge in their desires and I LOVED IT ALL. I loved the conspiracy, the characters, the pace – EVERYTHING.

4.       THE PACE AND THE DIMENSIONS:

Otherworld was FAST paced. There was never a dull moment, and the story kept moving and moving until we reached the end. Otherworld itself was filled with so many different dimensions – ones that revolved around rage, desire, greed and others, ruled by Elementals and it was BRILLIANT. The pace is also unrelenting and it just keeps going and I loved it.

5.       KAT, BUSARA, CAROLE, GOROG AND EVERYONE ELSE:

As much as I LOVED Simon, I also loved all of the other secondary characters especially Kat. They were fully rounded and flawed characters with their own desires that hit you in the face as you read through the book. I loved Busara and I’m very excited to see where the next book takes us with her.

Otherworld is a high stakes BRILLIANT fast paced novel centred around a more real than virtual virtual reality game that will keep you on the edge of your seat and you will love every minute of it. 4.5 stars.

In Short: This book was ADDICTIVE, filled with drama and twists at every turn, set in a futuristic New York that will blow your mind and even after you’ve read all four hundred pages of this book, you will be desperate for more.

When I went into The Dazzling Heights, I was under the impression that this book was the second part of a duology, but as I got closer and closer to the ending of this book, I knew that there was no way all the storylines would be tied up by the end of it and so I was SO HAPPY to see that there would be another book, effectively making this a trilogy. I honestly cannot WAIT for 2018 where I get to meet all these characters again.

Despite the fact that I LOVED book one, The Thousandth Floor, one of my biggest troubles while I read the book was getting to know and then remembering the varying storylines for each character.

When I opened The Dazzling Heights, I did not face that problem. Katharine McGee’s writing managed to pull me from India 2017 to New York 2118, with her cast of characters so seamlessly, I was a little astounded. Where I craved more drama in book one, book two did not STOP with the drama and the twists and character growth AND the vibrant futuristic technology.

In short, this book was a truly brilliant masterpiece.

THOUGHTS:

1.       The Thousandth Floor series has all the right elements – New York City in the FUTURE, a huge thousand floor tower that will make your imagination soar, characters that will remind you of the days you were a Gossip Girl junkie and twists and technology that is unparalleled.

2.       I struggled to find a favourite character in this book because they ALL grew on me so much. I loved that we saw a more human side to Avery, both a compassionate and ruthless side to Leda, and the fact that Watt, Rylin, Cord and Nadia grew as characters in general.

3.       I LOVED meeting all of the characters again and reading about them and their lives. They seem like such real people, and yet live a century in the future – THAT’S how good this book is.

4.       The only thing about this book that I didn’t like was Avery and Atlas’ relationship. I just didn’t feel anything about it. I didn’t feel the chemistry, I didn’t even think they were a good fit for each other, with the exception of the Forbidden Love thing.

5.       When we were first introduced to Calliope – the one main new character in this book, I thought I wouldn’t like her because of the undoubted havoc she was going to cause in the lives of my favourite characters. And yet, I was so glad that she too told a major part of the story through her view points, because by the end of the book, I genuinely respected this girl too.

6.       I also wish that there had been more about Eris herself. I feel like she was mostly glossed over and hardly emotionally dealt with by all the characters in this book and I wish it had been done better.

Despite the fact that I have minor problems with this book, I LOVED IT SO MUCH THAT I READ IT IN JUST. ONE. DAY. (all while my final exams were going on)

Katharine McGee’s BRILLIANT world had me spellbound and addicted with its perfect characters, technology and the twists that just keep coming. A series TRULY worth reading.

In Less Than A Thousand Words:

This Mortal Coil WAS AN ABSOLUTELY STUNNING, JAW DROPPING, FUTURISTIC MARVEL that I found SO hard to put down. EASILY one of the best books of 2017 and you need it in your lives.

Let’s go more into detail:

As I was unboxing my 15-Book box of mostly surprise book mail from Penguin India, all it took was one look at this ARC and I fell IN LOVE WITH IT. The sides are stained red, the cover art is GORGEOUS and I knew that whatever happened, I would be reading this book.

I took it with me, one fine morning, to college when all my friends decided it would be a great day for them to skip classes. I flipped it open, because what better way to spend a day with no interruptions that inside the pages of a beautiful book and my 2017 reading year will never be the same again.

This Mortal Coil way surpassed my expectations with its AMAZING plot, perfect futuristic tech that was unlike anything I’ve ever read about before, adrenaline, brilliant characters and a well, IT WAS JUST PERFECT, OKAY? This Mortal Coil made me fall madly in love with the futuristic sci-fi genre again and please excuse me while I shove this book in your face.

Here are some reasons why you should get your BookDragon claws into this book:

1.       Emily Suvada is a plotting GENIUS. This futuristic, apocalyptic world she created drew me in and I did NOT WANT THIS BOOK TO END, and I’m dying for a sequel to be announced because I need to be back in this world of biohacking and genomes and viruses and Black out soldiers and tech I haven’t even dreamed about.

2.       I absolutely loved Catarina Agatta who was badass, supremely smart and yet had her human moments where she ran, cried and felt fear. I loved everything about this girl and she had some MAD skills that you need to read the book to truly understand.

3.       There was this plot twist on page 401 of the ARC that LITERALLY MADE MY JAW DROP. I didn’t see it coming from any angle, and it just went to prove what an AMAZING book this debut author is sending out to the world.

4.       I ADORED COLE AND CATARINA. I loved the TECHNOLOGY IN THIS BOOK and the fast pace and the adrenaline just supplemented their relationship and I loved how they fit together. I can’t wait to learn more about what his blackout training entailed and what he can do and more about Catarina herself.

If me shouting in all uppercase through this review wasn’t enough for you, YOU NEED THIS BOOK IN YOUR LIFE, ON YOUR SHELVES AND MOVED TO THE TOP OF YOUR TBR.

This Mortal Coil is the masterpiece from a new voice that’s going to take the Young Adult world by storm. 5 stars!
